The teacher speaks personal. The course Reading and writing in Icelandic is tailored for you if you are a beginner in Icelandic, want to learn at a slower pace, and need training in reading and writing the Latin alphabet. The course focuses on learning the Icelandic alphabet thoroughly and practising pronunciation, as well as learning basic everyday vocabulary and simple sentence structure.

The course uses a variety of materials and different methods to practise all aspects of language learning. These aspects are comprehension, reading, writing and speaking practice, with a focus on Icelandic in daily life and self-empowerment to continue learning the language.

Training in digital skills is part of the course, where you will receive information about and have the opportunity to use practical websites and apps on computers and smartphones. Education about Icelandic society is woven into the course as appropriate for the group.

The course is taught in Persian and Icelandic.

Reading and writing in Icelandic is a course at the first level of the competency framework for the Icelandic education system and is a beginner's course in Icelandic at the pre-level and at level A1.1 according to The European Language Framework. The course uses a variety of teaching materials and active student participation to ensure effective and enjoyable learning of Icelandic. The course materials Icelandic for everyone 1 is used in part, alongside specialised material for training in pronunciation, reading and writing instruction, visual aids, games, cards, supplementary materials and various electronic resources. Also the material Words are Adventures – e-book | Centre for Education and School Services.

Learn the alphabet and pronunciation: You will get a good foundation to continue learning Icelandic and training in the Icelandic phonemic system.

You build up a basic vocabulary by using pictures and words effectively.

We focus on speech therapy and you practise simple and practical sentences.

You will receive training in the basics of reading and writing simple words and sentences. You will also practise writing simple words and basic personal information electronically.

You practise using practical websites and apps with computers and smartphones.

Grammar is presented in a very simple way in relation to the subject matter.

Your skills are assessed at the end of the course and you are given advice on the next steps in your Icelandic studies.

Each course is adapted to the specific group of students, so the focus may vary between groups to meet your needs.

The course is for people, 20 and over, who wants to learn Icelandic, has little schooling and/or is not proficient in Latin script.

By enrolling on an Icelandic course, students agree to be moved between groups if necessary to ensure the best possible learning outcome.

Assessment is based on attendance, oral assessments and in-class activities that encourage active participation.

To complete the programme and graduate, it is necessary to achieve 80% attendance.

The course is subsidised by the Education Fund to equalise access and promote learning for adults.

The programme is equivalent to up to 5 secondary school credits. The management of each school is responsible for its assessment of studies from other educational institutions.

A placement test at the start of the course is included in the course fee for those who need it to determine which level is best suited to them for their Icelandic studies. This ensures quality and better results.

Other: For those coming from countries outside the EEA: Part of the conditions set by the Immigration Authority for obtaining indefinite leave to remain in Iceland is to have completed 150 lessons/120 hours of Icelandic language study. It does not matter if different levels are taken or if levels are repeated.
