Menntastoðir is a specialised programme for you who wish to complete the first year of a further education course and have your studies credited towards a university foundation programme. The programme places an emphasis on providing students with good support and fostering a positive attitude towards learning. The programme is well-suited as preparation for further study.

Educational Foundations is a popular course that has provided many people with new opportunities. On this course, you will gain a solid foundation in core subjects, develop the skills to learn effectively, and build your confidence for further study.

After graduating from Menntastoðir, you can apply to preparatory departments at the University of Reykjavík, Keili and Bifröst, or go on to vocational, industrial or technical training.

In the distance learning programme, you complete your studies over two academic years. The course consists of five modules, with two subjects taught in each module. In addition, there are two subjects that are each taught over a single academic year. Study Skills is taught in the first year and Pleasure Reading in the second.

The course is for those who have not completed secondary school and are 20 years of age or older.

The course is taught in Icelandic. To participate in the course and to ensure the best possible academic success, participants must have a B2 level of proficiency in Icelandic, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. You can see the frame better here.

  • Assessment and progress are evaluated continuously, based on principles of formative assessment, including through summative assessment, coursework and active student participation.
  • Final exams (in mathematics, Icelandic and English) are taken at Mími or at another location as agreed with the project manager.
  • Students pay for the exam themselves if it is taken elsewhere than at Mími.
  • The course is subsidised by the Education Fund to equalise access and promote learning for adults.
  • Teaching is conducted in accordance with the curriculum of the Centre for Professional Education, accredited by the Centre for Education and School Services, which ensures quality and reliability. All curricula can be accessed here.
  • The programme is equivalent to up to 60 secondary school credits. The management of each school is responsible for its assessment of studies from other educational institutions.
  • Please note that a minimum number of participants is required for the course to go ahead.
