In the community interpreting programme, you will receive education, training and a diverse range of tools to carry out community interpreting in a professional and effective manner. A community interpreter conveys meaning between parties who do not speak the same language without taking a stance on the matter. On the course, you will learn about the role, responsibilities, procedures and challenges of interpreters. In addition, you will receive education about Icelandic society and its main institutions, and you will receive training in analysing controversial issues and interpreting in different situations.

A community interpreter interprets communication between people and public institutions across the social, education and healthcare sectors, in social situations, in daily life, in the workplace, and with organisations where the interests of others are at stake.

  • Icelandic society: Train your adaptability and deepen your understanding of the diverse cultures within Icelandic society.
  • Institutions in Icelandic society: Get an insight into the main institutions of society and their roles, such as local authorities, educational institutions, healthcare and social services.
  • Ethics and issues: Develop your ability to analyse and address issues in a multicultural context, based on human rights, equality, transparency and the code of ethics for interpreters.
  • Multicultural skills: Deepen your understanding of different cultures and enhance your ability to convey meaning between different parties.
  • Conditions and safety: Learn to assess situations and to create an environment where all parties feel safe, respected and equal.
  • Preparation for interpretation: Learn to plan and prepare projects based on the needs of all involved.
  • Administration and services: Get information and tools for your service based on professional practice and administration.
  • Interpreting techniques: Train interpretation techniques to ensure accurate and impartial communication between languages and cultures, where professionalism and respect are paramount.

The course is for people, aged 18 and over, who have a good knowledge of two or more languages, cultures and customs, wish to work as community interpreters and have the necessary skills to cope with all aspects of the course. To participate in the programme and to ensure the best possible academic success, students need to have B1.1 level proficiency in Icelandic according to the European Language Portfolio. You can Take a closer look at the frame here.

  • Assessment is based on attendance, coursework and active participation in the course.
  • To complete the course of study and graduate It is necessary to achieve an 80% meeting.
  • Teaching is conducted in accordance with the curriculum of the Training Authority for Business., Certified by the Centre for Education and School Services, which ensures quality and reliability. All curricula can be accessed here.
  • The course is subsidised by the Education Fund to equalise access and promote adult learning.
