Education courses at Mímir begin

Menntastoðir is an accredited programme that has been popular with adults for many years, and the course can be credited with up to 55 credits towards secondary school. The course is taught through distance learning, on-site study, and a combination of both. This makes it well-suited to working people. „Most people who take the Menntastoðir course are returning to education, even after a long break from studying, but the programme can open the way to vocational training, the student's diploma, or onto university bridges and universities,“ says Sólveig Hildur Björnsdóttir, director of Mímir. „There is strong demand for the course this autumn,“ says Sólveig Hildur, pointing out that the Training Fund subsidises the tuition fees.

Our teaching, facilities and follow-up are our hallmarks.

The course and all teaching arrangements take into account that many students are starting their studies again after a break. The tutors also have extensive experience of teaching adult learners. „Our hallmark throughout the years has been to provide excellent pastoral care for students, in collaboration with our fantastic teachers and academic and careers advisors, all of whom offer a free service. Furthermore, great emphasis is placed on collaboration and support among the students themselves, and on them creating their own learning communities. Such cohesion is particularly important for achieving success in one's studies,“ says Sólveig Hildur.

Education for 18 and over

Most people who enrol in the Learning Centres are between 22 and 35 years old and have in common that they have completed little or no further education. The oldest students in Menntastoðir are often in their fifties, but despite a wide age range and diverse backgrounds, people feel at ease in the groups and a strong sense of togetherness develops. The course covers core subjects such as Icelandic, mathematics, English, Danish and information technology, with an emphasis on students learning study skills, building their self-confidence and life skills. „Students receive a great deal of support with their studies, as it is often a big step to return to education after perhaps a long break. Many have even decided for themselves that they are not suited to academic study,“ says Sólveig Hildur. The aim is, not least, to help students realise that everyone can learn and that everyone can make their dreams come true. „We have countless stories of students who have surprised themselves, managing to climb mountains they thought were previously impossible. With these successes comes the confidence to tackle even bigger challenges,“ says Sólveig Hildur.

It's not too late to apply

These days, the staff at Mímir are in a flurry of activity, receiving applications for study. „We're really busy at the moment, receiving applications, and everyone is rushing to apply. The window of opportunity is open, so it's the perfect time to take the plunge,“ says Sólveig Hildur in conclusion.
