Day of the Icelandic Language
Icelandic Language Day is a day close to the hearts of the staff at Mímir, as the language is central to its activities. „Today is certainly a reason to celebrate, but also to look back on the past. We have been involved in Icelandic language teaching for twenty years here at Mímir, but our target group has, throughout the years, been people for whom Icelandic is a second language,“ says Sólveig Hildur Björnsdóttir, director of Mími, pointing out that the key to the Icelandic community often lies in mastering the language.
Icelandic Language Day is celebrated for the twenty-seventh time today. The day is the birthday of Jónas Hallgrímsson and has become established as a special day of celebration, reminding people of the importance of the Icelandic language.
„A nation's respect for its language and its care for it must be crucial in preserving the language,“ says Sólveig Hildur. „We must constantly look after the Icelandic language and give those who are learning it the opportunity to use it. It is very important that we enable those who want to learn Icelandic to practise and receive encouragement to do so,“ concludes Sólveig Hildur.“
