Social Studies visits the National Museum of Iceland
A course in Community Education for Arabic-speaking students is currently being held at Mímis. The course is in collaboration with the Employment Authority and is titled „The Settler“. Part of the course includes a visit to the National Museum of Iceland, which is part of linking the history of the country with their origins. In a conversation with Þórunn Grétarsdóttir, a project manager at Mímir, it is revealed that a certain foundation has been laid for the students before they visit the National Museum. "Topics such as the history, geography and lifestyle of Icelanders have been covered in the classroom. It provides a very good foundation for then visiting the National Museum of Iceland and receiving guidance from the specialists there. This brings the learning material to life and increases understanding of the country and its people," says Þórunn.
Comprehensive and educational curriculum
The curriculum is comprehensive, covering most aspects of Icelandic society and is designed so that people from other cultures can better understand the workings of the society. „Moving to a new country is a big step and it can be challenging to understand the society inside out. Things that we Icelanders take for granted may not be so in the eyes of other cultures. A small example could be how we dress our children for nursery school. You have to make allowances for them bringing different clothing for the weather and other things that people don't realise, but for those of us who grew up here, it's second nature. So the education ranges from the small-scale to the large-scale, like history and geography, right down to where you book an appointment with the GP,“ explains Þórunn.
