Ísbrú receives recognition from the President of Iceland
On the day of the Icelandic language, 16 November, the President of Iceland recognised the association Ísbrú for its good work. Ísbrú is an association of teachers who teach Icelandic as a second language at all school levels. Among the members of Ísbrú and the guests at Bessastaðir yesterday were a number of teachers who teach Icelandic at Mímir, as well as project managers from Mímir.
To quote the President:
„Icelandic is a wonderful and beautiful language and it is up to us to promote it and strengthen it even further. …. We must also ensure that people who move here from abroad can learn the language, and not least their children who are born here and will presumably become bilingual. We should all be tolerant and open-minded, recognise different accents and understand that it takes time to master all the endearing and colloquial words we use in our daily lives. Icelandic society has, of course, changed completely since the days of Jónas Hallgrímsson. For the most part, we have moved forward, street by street. Now, about a fifth of the country's population has roots abroad. Therefore, it is a national necessity that this part of society should learn Icelandic to the best of their ability and willingness.“
The teachers and staff of Mímir thank you for the recognition and will continue to enhance and develop the teaching of Icelandic as a second language with dedication and vigour.
