New training opportunity at Mími for people with disabilities
On 9th September, a new course, 'Skills for the Labour Market', was launched by Mímir Lifelong Learning. The course is aimed at people with disabilities who are taking their first steps into the mainstream job market. It is taught according to a curriculum published by the National Centre for Continuing Education.
The course is part of the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Labour Market's journey to increase educational and employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Fjölmennt, Vinnumálastofnun and the Fræðslumiðstöðvar atvinnulífsins were responsible for the development of the course, and several further education centres are responsible for its delivery.
Students will undertake 70 hours of study with Mímir to learn the theoretical part of skills in the labour market. This course will be supplemented by 110 hours of work placement, which is managed by the Vinnumálastofnun in collaboration with workplaces. Six course descriptions are already available, namely vocational training in social and service work, in warehousing, in recycling, in nurseries, in the travel and tourism industry, or in retail.
Eight students began their studies at Mímir, but further education centres across the country are taking part in the project. Upon completion of the course, participants receive a qualification certificate in the form of a Professional Certificate.
Earlier this month, Gudmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, Minister for Social Affairs and the Labour Market, visited Mími to celebrate the launch of this new course.
Here is a news story from Vísir.is where, among other things, two students were interviewed when Gudmundur Ingi came to visit.
