Graduation of students from Skills Training for the Labour Market

Students with intellectual disabilities and other types of disabilities graduated yesterday, 12 December, from a brand-new training course at Mímir called 'Skills for the Labour Market'. It is a skills programme designed to enhance the employability of people with intellectual disabilities. The course is offered by adult education centres across the country, which are currently graduating around 70 students from the programme.

„Joy shone from every face at the graduation, and we wholeheartedly congratulate the students on their performance,“ says Sólveig Hildur Björnsdóttir, Managing Director of Mímir.

„This is an ambitious collaborative project by the Employment Authority, The Training Centres of the Business Sector, Fjölmennt and adult education centres, which aims to give students with disabilities the opportunity to enhance their skills, social development and empowerment. “We hope the course will lead to new opportunities for further study and/or employment," says Sólveig Hildur, pointing out that the course will be available again after the New Year through the centres for lifelong learning, including Mímir.

Stöð 2's news agency spoke to students after yesterday's graduation ceremony, who said the course had been both educational and enjoyable.

„The opportunities this is creating, we're hearing that individuals have got job interviews and offers and possibly further study with Mími, and this is just fantastic and that's exactly what the aim was. It was to lift up this group which has few opportunities,“ said Sara Dögg Svanhildardóttir, a specialist in employment opportunities for disabled people, among other things, in the interview with Stöð 2.
