The Icelandic 1 course is tailored for you as a beginner in Icelandic. The course focuses on building a basic vocabulary for everyday language, in both comprehension and speech, using a variety of practical methods.

Icelandic 1 is a beginner's course at level A1.1 according to The European Language Framework. The course uses a variety of learning materials and active student participation to ensure effective and enjoyable Icelandic language learning. English is used as a lingua franca in the teaching.

The curriculum Icelandic for everyone 1 is used as an additional  supplementary material and various electronic resources. 

 

Learn the alphabet, pronunciation and basic vocabulary: You will get a good foundation to continue learning Icelandic.

We focus on speech therapy and you practise simple and practical sentences.

All language skills are practised in the Icelandic course: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The grammar is presented in a simple way in the context of the subject matter.

Your skills are assessed at the end of the course and you are given advice on the next steps in your Icelandic studies.

The course is for people, 18 and over, ...who wants to learn Icelandic. English is used as a lingua franca in the teaching if necessary. Participants need to be able to read and write in the Latin script and have a basic understanding of English.

A tailored solution for diverse groups: For those who do not have English proficiency, Icelandic 1 – Part 1 (slow pace) or courses for specific language groups where the teacher speaks the group's language are offered.

  • A placement test at the start of the course is included in the course fee for those who need it to determine which level is best suited to them for their Icelandic studies. This ensures quality and better results.
  • To graduate and receive a certificate, it is necessary to pass 75% attendance on the course.
  • Please note that a minimum number of participants is required for the course to go ahead.
  • The Icelandic courses at Mími are based on the Icelandic language curriculum for foreigners, published by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Other: For those coming from countries outside the EEA: Part of the conditions set by the Immigration Authority for obtaining indefinite leave to remain in Iceland is to have completed 150 teaching hours/120 hours of Icelandic language study. It does not matter if different levels are taken or if levels are repeated.
