Kindergarten workshop and Icelandic language learning

Mímir Lifelong Learning now offers the course 'Nursery School Workshop and Icelandic'.

The course is for people who want to work in a nursery but need to improve their Icelandic to make their dream a reality.

Juraté and Naira recently completed a Preschool Workshop at Mími. We met the pair and had a chat about the course and their experience of it. According to them, the atmosphere and teamwork in the group were very good. „It was so inspiring to work and learn together; the most interesting part of the course was what I learnt about art, games and singing to stimulate children's creative thinking,“ said Juraté, as the course places a strong emphasis on creative work, teaching, for example, how to use visual arts, singing and outdoor teaching in work with children. But what was the most interesting, in Naira's opinion?

„What I liked best was being able to listen and speak Icelandic for more than five hours at a time, for a long period. The course also includes music and art. Our teacher, Gulla, is also brilliant and she has taught us a lot about Icelandic traditions and, of course, given us lots of information related to nursery work, which is so useful.”.

The placement at a nursery is also an important part of the course, where students get to take an active part in the daily work of a nursery. We were curious to know how the two, Naira and Juraté, experienced their placement „The placement went well and I was able to use what I had learnt on the course in creative activities with the children. I also learnt many new Icelandic words that I can use when communicating with the children in the future,“ said Juraté happily.

„The work placement went brilliantly,“ Naira added. „It's obviously a learning curve, as this is the first time I've met English-speaking people and there's a lot to learn, especially the customs and getting to know the kids. I learnt a lot in a short space of time and I'm looking forward to going back“.

Finally, we asked the ladies if they would recommend the course?

„Yes, I would recommend this course to others, it is a very good foundation for working with children in nurseries or primary schools and has prepared me to understand and shape teaching that encourages the children's creative thinking,“ said Juraté.

When Naira was asked if she could also recommend the course, her answer was short and to the point:

Of course! Yes, a thousand times.
