Interview with the head of the Icelandic studies programme at Mími with an AFP journalist
Last week, we had a visit from a journalist from the news agency AFP. Joanna Dominiczak, Head of the Icelandic Studies programme at Mímir, spoke with him about how Mímir has developed Icelandic language teaching in collaboration with workplaces. This course structure has proven to be highly effective, as it meets the needs of both students and employers.
Workplace training – Practical and flexible
On-the-job training has the advantage of fitting well with the students' daily work. Students learn the language in an environment where they use it for work, which increases both their understanding and confidence in communication. The head of department mentioned that this approach makes Icelandic lessons accessible to people who would otherwise find it difficult to attend traditional classes due to work pressure or other commitments.
Challenges in learning Icelandic
Although this arrangement has many advantages, the challenges of learning Icelandic were also discussed. The subject leader emphasised that support from employers and the students' environment was key, both in the form of encouragement and by creating an environment where Icelandic is used in daily life.
The impact of Icelandic studies on students' careers
What stood out in the interview was how learning Icelandic has had a positive impact on students„ careers. The Head of Department shared numerous examples of students who had been given more responsibility, improved their job security, or even secured new jobs after gaining better skills in Icelandic. “Improved Icelandic skills open doors,„ she said. “It increases students' networks and enables them to take an active part in workplace culture, facilitating career progression."
The interview concluded on an interesting note about the future of Icelandic studies at Mími. The head of the department mentioned that the aim was to develop more digital solutions and to further strengthen partnerships with businesses. „The aim is always to provide our students with opportunities to grow, both in their careers and personally in their daily lives,“ she concluded.
At Mímir, we believe that learning Icelandic is the key to new opportunities and increased social participation. We are grateful to be working on this important project with our wonderful students and partners.
