Growing demand for Mími's competence assessment for staff in nurseries, primary schools and care services.

Practical skills assessment at Mími The early childhood education, support worker and social work courses have got off to a good start this spring term. So far this term, ten people have completed the recognition of prior learning assessment, and eight are beginning the process.

The concept of informal competence stems from the idea that learning takes place beyond the formal education system and occurs in a variety of situations. An assessment of competence is a recognition of the knowledge, skills and experience that an individual has acquired through various means, e.g. through work experience, leisure learning, voluntary work and family life.

A skills assessment can therefore be crucial for people who have gained extensive work experience without formal qualifications. This applies, for example, to staff in nurseries and primary schools, or to people who have worked in care for many years and are considering further study. An assessment of prior learning takes into account the experience and knowledge an individual has acquired, and it is possible to award it with credits at post-secondary level. This can significantly shorten the time it takes to complete a course of study and make it easier for people to start or finish their qualifications.

Mímir's competency assessment is intended for individuals aged 23 and over who have at least three years of work experience in the field being assessed. Those who are unsure whether a skills assessment is suitable for them can start by completing a screening questionnaire on the Mímir website for nursery assistant, support officera- or Club team tracks. The skills assessment is free of charge for participants who have not completed secondary education, in accordance with the conditions of further education.

Participants in the competence-based assessment describe a positive experience and believe the process has boosted their self-confidence and made their skills more visible. In many cases, the competence assessment has been a catalyst for returning to education, where the results have been used to shorten courses and have also strengthened their position in the job market.
